lEGACY AND MEMORY OF THE COLD WAR

IN THE URBAN SPACE OF ST. PETERSBURG

Русский | English

Welcome! Our project is a unique opportunity to look at the history of Saint Petersburg during the Cold War period through key objects of the urban space. You will be able to learn the history of Saint Petersburg as the second capital of Russia, discover the cultural and symbolic aspects of the Soviet past and understand the permeability of the impermeable Iron Curtain.

Why Cold War?

• St. Petersburg is known as the cradle of revolutions and as a besieged city, but its role in subsequent events was no less noticeable. The late Soviet Leningrad was a major scientific, military, and cultural center influencing the policy of the Soviet Union during the Cold war. Global events of this time also left their mark on the urban space of Leningrad, its place names, objects, and people. These impacts were not limited by military confrontation but included various interactions with the West. Our project will show that the Cold War was not only an ideological conflict between two superpowers– the USSR and the United States, but also a complex interaction of politics, culture, society, technology, and the city.

Who will be interested in the project?

• For both specialists and history amateurs whose interests include the legacy of St. Petersburg, the USA, and the Cold War period.

What have we prepared?

• Concise reference material with photos of modern objects in St. Petersburg that were significant in the second half of the 20th century.

• Interactive map-route with basic information on objects. The map`s use will help you to see the places described in the flesh.

Who are we?

• A team of students of the Higher School of Economics of St. Petersburg (Assistant Professor of the Department of History Elena Kochetkova). Together, we have created a resource that aims to integrate local stories into global processes.
